Why Breaking Bad is Television's Magnum Opus (Video Essay)
A new chapter is knocking, and it all starts with my favorite show of all time.
Breaking Bad follows Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher who turns to a life of crime after he is diagnosed with lung cancer. Joining him in his meth-making endeavors is former student Jesse Pinkman. Together, the pair run afoul of New Mexico’s most dangerous gangsters, including the murderous Salamanca cartel family and the criminal mastermind Gustavo Fring.

The Problem With The Falcon and Winter Solider
I love Enola Holmes
To me, it became obvious that Walt always had this capability was when it was revealed that his story about how Elliot stole his fiancé and forced him out of the company was not true. He was a victim of his own ego, even at that point. Also, I believe that was a defining point for him. It was a lie that he told until he believed it. He would never allow himself to be “forced” away from his destiny again. Between this and the fear that he’d die like his father, I think that Heisenberg was always there. He just needed a little nudge to show his face. That nudge just happened to show up in the form of a cancer prognosis.
I don't believe in Platonic Ideals, but Breaking Bad might be an exception. It's perfect. It is as it should always have been.
Thank you for being the only person in the history of mankind to make a vid about BrBa and not call it "Breakingbad"
overrated show. sopranos is easily better
Did you all already forget about the Sopranos?
i started loving skyler during a rewatch. shes my baby actually
Finally! Someone saw the connection between Breaking Bad and Crime and Punishment! Yay! I’m not alone! All the best!
I agree.
This video was fantastic. The show was utterly magnficient. I've watched it a few times through and will still do so more in the future.
The White family lives on Negra Arroyo Lane. Did no one in the writers' room ever even take Spanish 1?
This video is the magnum opus of youtube essays. Holy crap, this is so good. Even weaving in that Crime and Punsihment quote? My goodness this is 🔥🔥🔥
that intro gave me goosebumps
Tbh skylar is a bit naggy and can be cringey (you know the scene) but she’s never unreasonable, even sleeping with Ted isn’t really bad on her end. She expressed how she was done with Walt, only staying because he threatened her. Skylar is a victim and I’m glad she got away in the end.
I am loving this video so far, and I'm grateful to the creator for making it, but is it me or did the narrator refer to the breakfast in episode 1 as "veggie bacon" in one breath and then "turkey bacon" in the next, right around the 20:00 mark?
how could bb be television's magnum opus if bcs is objectively better? (objectively speaking)
You’re gotta watch The Sopranos just so we can get a video from you on it!
I don’t think Raskolnikov would have been so troubled if it weren’t for his having murdered Lizaveta. He was ready to kill Alyona, but nobody else.
I actually feel embarrassment and pain for anyone who refuses to watch the two best shows ever presented to the human population. You are braindead and a walking, talking npc.
Well said... its all true... another thing I would add is that he has a quality to lock onto the humour of the moment without being dismissive or derrogatory (with the exception of Jordan Schlansky) or trying too much to impress (with the exception of Rebecca Romijn) ... he is my favorite too
Bruh you could have made a 40 minute video just in the style of that intro and I would still have watched the whole thing, that music choice was unparalleled
Crime and Punishment isn't "a magical little fairy tale".
Time to start the show again I guess lol :)
I started watching him back in NBC when Andy wasn't there in the mid 2000s. The fond memories of everything that was terribly wrong with the characters of Max Weinberg and Joel Godard the other writers who were in sketched too, those were my fondest memories of him even if I kept on watching until the end. Admittedly I would often just watch the first half hour then go to sleep.
Walter was gaslit by his bitch wife into thinking he was doing it for selfish reasons. She was willing to tear the family apart because she thought he was dealing fucking weed and one of the last things Walter did was ensure his money went to his family.
Satire?
@@Valvusueuehdhrieie If you honestly think that's satire you weren't paying attention.
I found this in my recommended while killing some time this morning, but Ive decided just now that I refuse to listen to (or read in comments) any kind of secular exploration into anything at all from this point foward in my life, i may rewatch breaking bad at some point if i ever find the time to piss away. Im sure youre video is very well made. Goodbye.
Dude nobody cares
@@devonbacha4037 ❤️
Sopranos betta
Walt started becoming heisenberg the day he was born. He was already an egomaniac frame 1, harboring resentment towards his former colleagues and boss. He doesn't just do things for the family, but their praise. He latched onto that appreciation once he got into business. He liked feeling powerful and in control.
Thanks for putting this together. Every time I visit the breaking bad universe I learn something new.
The first 2 minutes of this video have one of the best editing I have seen in any UA-cam video! This is some top level storytelling After finishing the video I have to congratulate the creator. The editing throughout this whole video essay is top notch! I cant even imagine how much time it took to find all of these specific shots and sentences. Some of the visual similarities from shot to shot that you managed to find are just si beautyfull! The one where Jessie looks at Walter one last time fluidly jump cutting into young Jessie speaking to a younger Walt. Perfection! Keep it up man! This type of content is what UA-cam is made for I hope you get millions of views and get the recognition you deserve!
100% agree!
Only watched the intro so far as I write this and Jesus Christ what an amazing edit.
Conan wants to entertain people. Fallon wants people to like him, Kimmel and Colbert want to show they are "smart".
You don't really miss them till they're gone
This is without a doubt the best Breaking Bad video I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of them. Good fucking work man!
Not to nitpick such a great video, but it’s “delusions of grandeur” not illusions.
Love the video--one ridiculous note that you dont need to listen to: your bitmoji guy with a white BG kills me watching this at night in like dark mode lol. would love if the background was any other color in future bids for the night-owl-rabbit-hole folk
The moment he became Heisenberg was when he was asked by someone and his reply was Heisenberg NOT Walter white
This editing is amazing
Conan is king! 🤴
It's possible to love someone without hating other people.
I think Walter was manipulating his son and wasn't as traumatized as you believe. He rarely if ever talked about his parents until that scene and that is very suspicious as to his true intentions. Walter got you all fooled as well.
We can also thank Conan for giving us Ellie Kemper, Jon Krasinski, Mindy Kaling, Amy Poehler, and Jack Mcbrayer who were all interns on his show. I also love all the jabs at Jimmy. He's just the worst.
Damn. You really gathered EVERYTHING this had to offer on the scene of what this was about and how it was delivering it all, even jokes, damn. What a gathering of everyone's thoughts and so beautifully composed into a single magnum opus, great job.
Walter White may not be the most psychologically complex character on television, characters like Tony Soprano or Jimmy McGill have a little more nuance; but Walt is still the best character on television because you don’t just understand his turn to the dark side in on an intellectual level, you can feel it. Breaking Bad is often criticized for being a power fantasy, but that’s precisely the point. Walt is living out his power fantasy in the form of Heisenberg and even when he is doing the most reprehensible things there is a tiny part of us that is still rooting for him. There is a tiny part of us that feels the same gratification Walt feels when he embraces the Heisenberg persona. That’s because there is a tiny Heisenberg inside all of us and the whole point of the show is to warn us that if we let it out, though it may feel good, we could lose everything that truly matters to us.
Amazing work, thank you❤
Gilligan is an absolute genius. Go back and watch some of those old X Files episodes that he directed and you can tell immediately the episodes that he played a large role in writing and directing. That’s where he honed his craft.
Here after watching his Hot Ones episodes and Conan Must Go series. Goated.
23:30… it’s funny you bring this up because Skyler had multiple chances to “protect her family” but refused them all… was she over hated initially… yes Is Skylar a bad person who did a bunch of narcissistic and manipulative things… yes
Blud aint watch snowfall yet
That intro didn't have to do that hard 😂
